Philippe Varin, leader del settore industriale a livello mondiale, è il nuovo Presidente della International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). Dopo aver fatto parte dell’Executive Board di ICC dal 2018, Varin prende il posto di Maria Fernanda Garza – prima Presidente donna a ricoprire tale incarico e nominata ora Presidente Onorario – con il voto unanime degli oltre 90 comitati nazionali riuniti a Parigi presso la sede di ICC Global.
Philippe Varin ha commentato così la sua elezione:
“I am deeply conscious that the founding mission of the International Chamber of Commerce – to promote peace and prosperity through global trade – is of immense strategic importance and a challenge in a world that is increasingly characterised by conflicts and intense geoeconomic competition.
“The international business community needs to be more vocal in calling out the risks of economic and political fragmentation – as well as the damaging effects of unilateral and protectionist policies. I am committed to ensuring that business leads from the front in driving policy reforms to address major global challenges – in particular by mobilising innovative coalitions to accelerate sustainable development.”
Per il suo mandato biennale quale presidente di ICC, Varin punta a generare un impatto reale per imprese grandi e piccole, con una strategia articolata in cinque pilastri: commercio internazionale, rule of law, piano d’azione sui cambiamenti climatici, digitalizzazione del commercio e cooperazione multilaterale.
Varin ha aggiunto:
“In a uniquely challenging environment for the private sector, I feel an immense responsibility to ensure that ICC delivers real impact for businesses – large and small – across our global network. I look forward to working with our teams across the world to maximise the value and reach of our full suite of activities and services.”
Commentando l’elezione di Varin, il Segretario Generale di ICC, John W.H. Denton AO ha dichiarato:
“Philippe’s assured leadership, focus on performance and delivery, and deep understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing international business will be hugely valuable as we continue our transformation to a stronger and more dynamic institution.
“I look forward to working hand-in-hand with Philippe throughout his tenure and take this opportunity to thank our outgoing chair, Maria Fernanda Garza, for the unique value she has created for our global network over the past two years.”
ICC ha inoltre annunciato l’elezione di tre business leaders che entrano a far parte della chairmanship di ICC: Harsh Pati Singhania (First-Vice Chair), Shinta Kamdani (Vice Chair) and Patrick Obath (Vice Chair).
Chi è Philippe Varin
Philippe Varin ha ricoperto precedentemente il ruolo di Vice President for Aluminum del gruppo Pechiney, prima di diventare CEO di Corus nel 2003, supervisionando la sua acquisizione da parte di Tata nel 2007.
Varin ha presieduto PSA Peugeot Citroen dal 2009 al 2014 e, successivamente, Areva e Orano fino al 2020. Ha guidato France Industrie e il Conseil National de l’Industrie dal 2017 al 2021, ha presieduto Suez dal 2020 al 2022 e ha co-presieduto il World Materials Forum dal 2015.
Varin è partner operativo del GVP Climate Investment Fund. Presiede inoltre la partnership C’Possible volta a migliorare le opportunità di formazione professionale in Francia.
Tre nuovi business leaders entrano a far parte della chairmanship di ICC: Harsh Pati Singhania (J.K.Organisation) è stato eletto First-Vice Chair, insieme a Shinta Kamdani (Sintesa Group) e Patrick Obath (Adrian Kenya Limited) nominati Vice Chairs.
Un ringraziamento particolare va all’Amb. Giampiero Massolo, che dopo due mandati lascia il Board di ICC, per il suo instancabile impegno e per la sua visione a supporto della mission di ICC.
Il Segretario Generale di ICC, John Denton, ha annunciato un nuovo modello operativo che prevede la creazione di nuovi ruoli esecutivi, in particolare:
• Chief Operating Officer, Claire Millar
• Deputy Secretary General – Network, Julian Kassum
• Deputy Secretary General – Policy, Andrew Wilson
Insieme ad Alexander G Fessas e Ana Serra E Moura – rispettivamente Secretary General e Deputy Secretary General della ICC International Court of Arbitration – Claire, Julian ed Andrew formeranno il nuovo Executive Committee di Denton, lavorando a stretto contatto con l’esistente “Unify+” management team.
